A simple robot can be built from a 3 1/5" floppy drive and a few purchased hardware components.  The original plans were missing some key elements (the web page was under construction, but never finished).  The pulley system ran the wheels too fast with no torque (1 to 4), so we used a smaller pulley on the drive motor and get more like 1 to 1.

  1. Parts and tools needed to get started
  2. Making the Power Cables and Floppy Cable (Test your floppy drive before moving ahead)
  3. Building the Floppy carriage and pulley assembly
  4. Floppy Cable Pinout  (taken from Floppy the Robot page)
  5. Connecting to the Computer
  6. Creating the external cable (more to come)
  7. Pictures of Floppy the Robot in Action and Dressed up!
