What is
the NETS project?
The NETS
(National Educational Technology Standards) Project goal
is to use established guidelines from ISTE (International
Society for Technology in Education) to assist educational
leaders in integrating information technology into the teaching
of curriculum in a way that is meaningful and age appropriate.
In addition, the NETS project links technology standards
to sample activities that model project-based learning.
Activities model the integration of information technology
into the teaching of the Ontario curriculum and are categorized
by grade, subject, strand and software used.
What are
NETS (National Educational Technology Standards)?
NETS are technology
standards for students. They are divided into six
broad categories that remain consistent from Pre K to grade
12. These standards are guidelines as to what technology
skills should be introduced, reinforced, and mastered by
students. The categories provide a framework for linking
performance indicators, based on grade level, to the standards.
Teachers can use these standards and performance indicators
as guidelines for planning technology-based activities in
which students achieve success in learning, communication,
and life skills.
The 6 main
NETS (technology standards) are:
1. Basic Operations
and Concepts
2. Social, ethical, and human issues 3.
Technology productivity tools 4.
Technology communications tools 5.
Technology research tools 6.
Technology problem-solving and decision-making tools
Each standard
has performance indicators for each division (PreK-2, Grades
3-5, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12). NETS performance indicators
describe what students should know about and be able to
do with technology.
