Project Title:
My Family
Description: The children will build a mind map about their families using Kidspiration. There will be a brainstorming session in the classroom encompassing the following areas: who is in our families, how our families make us feel, things we do with our families, where we go with our families. The children will use the computers to display this information in a concept map. The children will then use the writing tool to complete one sentence for each bubble/symbol used in the program.

Project Title:
Genetic Continuity Debate
Description: Students will research and plan for a debate using Smart Ideas software. They will then engage in a debate on a controversial issue. In the outline provided, students will debate topics to enhance their understanding of expectations from the Genetic Continuity Unit. Other science units/topics that involve debatable issues can be easily substituted.

Project Title:
Making Connections Through Literature
Description: Students are introduced to the comprehension strategy of making connections to text. The teacher
will model making connections during reading by thinking aloud and defining the 3 different types
of connections. The introductory lesson leads students to a Kidspiration/Inspiration template
where they can add their connections along with graphics. This lesson format can be repeated
throughout the year with students starting from scratch within Kidspiration/Inspiration and
building their own graphic representation of the connections they make while reading.

Project Title:
Character Traits
Description: This lesson begins as a class novel study to model the process of identifying main characters traits as well as the use of Kidspiration/Inspiration to produce a graphic organizer. Throughout the year students can continue to use this lesson format in small groups and independent reading response assignments. An excellent novel to use as the model is Stone Fox (however feel free to use any novel of your choice). After completing the reading as a class (amount read each day is also up to the classroom teacher) together the class will list the traits of the main character and describe examples from the story that highlight each. The final assignment will be to use a template to produce a graphic organizer for the main character’s traits.

Food Chains
Description: This activity can be used during a unit of study on Habitats and Communities or as a culminating project. Creating a Classroom Newspaper
Description: Students will create a newspaper, both individually and as a small group. Students will explore the
components of a newspaper, identifying various types of media works and a variety of the techniques used in
them. Students will write a letter to the editor, create a persuasive advertisement, interview someone
important to them, create a comic strip, write an article about a sporting event, write an article about Healthy
Living and create other articles of interest. Students will learn about the roles of the editor, reporter, and the
reader.

Project Title:
Character Traits
Description: This project is designed to teach students how to analyse characters, select character traits, and
provide proof from the text to support their decisions. Students will read the short story, The
Most Dangerous Game, which is available online, but can be printed for students. They will then
develop the skills necessary for understanding character traits using exercises available online
from Read•Write•Think. Next, students will analyse characters as either round or flat and create a
character comparison of main characters using a Venn Diagram using either Smart Ideas or
Inspiration (examples have been provided for both). Finally students will produce a character
map using on online resource from Read•Write•Think and a character web with either Smart
Ideas or Inspiration. This final character web will be presented to classmates.
