Introduction
The S.Y.nergy Challenge was a competition designed by high school students, for high school students. In teams, the challenge was to build a water heater prototype powered by a photovoltaic system. Prototypes were limited to budget and size constraints, but other than that teams had the freedom to build their prototypes with whatever materials they wanted… and with as much innovation as they could muster. Through the S.Y.nergy Initiative’s partners and sponsors, each team was provided an initial budget with which to build their prototype. Teams were also paired up with mentors from the University of Western Ontario Faculty of Engineering, giving high school students the unique opportunity to receive expert advice and feedback along the design process.
