Congratulations to the Central Energizers, proud winners of S.Y.nergy Competition 2007!

S.Y.nergy Challenge as a Culminating Task

We realized that building a photovoltaic water heater prototype may be a daunting task for many students, as there were many concepts that must be mastered before they could be applied – concepts that may not have been previously encountered in the high school curriculum.

Therefore we have made it easy to integrate the S.Y.nergy Challenge into a science or technology and design class as a culminating project. Such a culminating project would revolve around the application of scientific concepts to the design of something practical and relevant to society’s current concerns. In terms of what would be gained, students would learn how to conduct good research, the process of prototype design, how to work effectively with a team, and most importantly, give students the opportunity to connect with the actual scientific community and have an accurate look at a current field of great concern.

On April 25th, 2006, the S.Y.nergy Team gave a presentation to an audience of teachers from several high schools across the Thames Valley District School Board. At this presentation they were introduced to the possibility of the S.Y.nergy Challenge as a culminating project.
