Budget

A big thank you to Western Engineering through the UWO and the Thames Valley District School Board. The budget contraint is a maximum of $200, which was reimbursed through receipts. All receipts were to be kept in record Using scavenged materials was encouraged – with estimated depreciation values prior to the contest date. |
We realized that finding household materials to build a working prototype of a solar water heater was going to be difficult. Plus, we all hate having to buy expensive materials for projects – face it, we’re poor students. Thanks to the
generous contributions of the Thames Valley District School Board and Western Engineering through the University of Western Ontario, we were able to provide each design team with a budget of $200. This simulates a real
design project, and more importantly, ensures that all interested high school students could take up this challenge.
The provided budget was also the maximum value of money a design team was allowed to spend. This is a measure put in place to ensure the competition is not merely a race of who has the most money and the best purchased technology. To ensure that spending did not exceed the $200 value and also to encourage good organization, it was required that all purchases be recorded and receipts kept.
We also highly encouraged scavenging for old or used materials to build the working prototype. Scavenged materials must also be recorded and included as part of the budget money, taking into account depreciation; thus its value was count as less than the same item newly purchased.
