Mentors
This is a project that required knowledge not typically encountered at the high school level; the challenge of designing an energy- and cost-efficient photovoltaic water heater is a considerable one even for professional engineers. As such, 
we on the S.Y.nergy Team felt that it was very important to connect the design teams to an expert in the field, and Western Engineering (through the University of Western Ontario) generously agreed to provide such mentors. Each design team was be paired with a university student at Western Engineering who acted as a mentor throughout the design and construction process.
We also encouraged that the relationship between the team and the mentor is similar to that between partners in a project; the mentor’s knowledge would be a great resource for a team. However, mentors are for guidance and not to do the project for the teams. They were also students themselves and had busy schedules, so teams were asked to their time in a considerate manner.
