Litterless Lunches March 23-27th 09 Litterless Lunch GOTCHAS
March 30 - April 3rd 09 the Campaign is ON!! ...no litter in our lunches at LORD ELGIN Check out our March/April results.
A waste free lunch (sometimes called litter-less, smart, garbage-less or waste-not lunch) contains no throwaway packaging or food leftovers.
Members of Student council gather up all of the evidence from a sample of a "Day of Lunch Garbage at Lord Elgin What follows is the story and the weighing in results!!!
How to Pack a Waste Free Lunch · A reusable lunch bag or box (not a throw-away, single-use plastic or paper bag). · Reusable containers for packing food (no plastic wrap, foil, plastic bags, single-serving containers, pre-packaged foods). Hard plastic food containers or re-use of plastic tubs are suitable options. · Reusable drink containers e.g. thermos, or reusable bottle (single-use pop cans, water bottles, juice boxes). Recyclable containers (pop cans) are discouraged but acceptable as long as the student ensures they go into the recycling bin. · Organic waste like apple cores, orange and banana peels, other leftovers etc. that can either be composted through a school composting program or at home. · Non-disposable cutlery (silverware) and a cloth napkin.
We separated our Trash from our Recyclables. Student's Council Collected all of the bins and
put all of the garbage into 1 bag and all of recyclables into another.
We made sure that recycle and garbage were separated properly.
Then we weighed the stinky garbage...can you estimate how much waste we produce each day? Oh Come on take a guess (the answer is below)
Then we weighed the recycling...again can you guess how much it was?

Without our campaign we produce on average 8 pounds of garbage in one
day of snacks and lunch recess! That is 40 pounds a school week, 160 pounds
a month and that is 1600 pounds for a school YEAR! In addition we produced 2 more pounds of recycling or compostable waste. 10 pounds a week, 40 pounds a month and 480 pounds for a school year. How did we do once we tried to reduce the waste??
Only 4 pounds of waste and 1 pound of recycled materials. This would suggest that we are using MORE REUSABLE Materials in our lunches. Great Job Lions. Let's see how we do the rest of the week.

THE ULTIMATE ECO CHALLENGE - - - THE ECO PROMISE How could we do more for our planet? What challenges could we give ourselves to make this more than a 1 day event? What if we did this every day for a year?? What can you do to answer the challenge for our ecology, for our environment, for our planet? Write a personal journal response or dear diary entry with your own answer to the Litterless Lunch Challenge and try to follow it each day. Together we can make a difference.
