TVDSB announces new vending machine contracts
June 23, 2004

The Thames Valley District School Board has entered into five-year agreements with three separate vendors to provide food and beverage machines to participating secondary and elementary schools. The new contracts will go into effect on September 1 and will remain active until August 31, 2009.

Contracts for milk, cold beverages, and snack vending services have been awarded to Dairyland Fluid Division Ltd., Pepsi Bottling Group, and Chartwells respectively. Each contract was awarded following an extensive Request for Proposal process. Bids were reviewed by committees comprised of a Trustee, a superintendent, principals, administrative personnel and representatives from school-based parent groups. Priority was given to proposals that featured healthy food and beverage choices as defined by Refreshments Canada, local Health Units, and Canada’s Guide to Healthy eating.

"We want to be sure that our vending machines feature nutritious food options not only for our students and teachers, but for the community groups that use our schools," said Superintendent of Business Services Brian Greene. "The successful bids will help schools generate significant revenue while maintaining the emphasis we set on healthy eating."

School administrators will be responsible for deciding what products are made available in specific machines. The cold beverage contract was awarded on the grounds that no carbonated beverages will be available in elementary schools. Snack machine options provided by Chartwells will be developed in consultation with school administrators to ensure that healthy food choices are available. No snack machines will be located in elementary schools.

The combined contracts are expected to generate revenue rebates amounting to approximately $4 million that will be distributed to schools over the next five years.
