Pathways - Student Success Teachers

As part of the Ontario government’s Student Success Strategy, the Ministry of Education has invested $89-million to hire 800 new Student Success Teachers to support the needs of struggling students in every high school across the province.

Giving Priority to Struggling Students

Since September 2006, every high school across the Thames Valley District School Board has at least one Student Success Teacher as part of their staff. Working under the direction of Student Success Leader, Marie Chambers, Student Success Teachers (SSTs) work with struggling students to track their progress, help them gain missing credits, and support the development of better programs and services.

The Student Success Teacher has four main responsibilities:

  1. To mentor and speak on behalf of struggling students.
  2. To monitor the progress of struggling students.
  3. To lead the development of student success initiatives in their school.
  4. To provide instruction and assistance as needed.

SSTs also support school-wide programs that help struggling students work within the curriculum, and deal with parents and the community to ensure success for all students. In general, SSTs are focused on providing the necessary support so that all struggling students can achieve success in school and in life.
