MINUTES OF MEETING

JEANNE SAUV´E  HOME AND SCHOOL/SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING

12 March, 2004, 6.30-8.15PM

(A list of those attending, with email addresses, is attached at the end of these minutes)

Principal’s Report

Our anticipated enrolment for 2004/05 currently stands at an increase of 15FTE’s.  Most of these prospective students are for the G7 extended program

Staff Changes  - 2004/05

M Rosen will be teaching at the prestigious American School in Shanghai from September – our congratulations to him

Mlle McQueen will be returning home to her native New Brunswick – to get married and resume her career there – congratulations to her and her fiancé

Mme Stepan will be rejoining us on a full time basis from September

Mme Pelton will continue in a half time position for the coming year

Adam will be spending the next several weeks reviewing class organization/timetabling for  the incoming year, as always endeavouring to avoid split classes wherever possible.

Adam updated the group on the recent French Immersion Accommodation Study carried out by the Board.  This confirmed that  French Immersion is non mandated and optional and that there is a substantial deficit between the  actual funding of the program and the costs associated with it eg transport and other overheads.  The Board will seek to hear presentations in September/October on the optimum means of accommodating the French Immersion Program in future, given the declining  school enrollment numbers across Thames Valley and the opportunities this might create to further maximize available accommodation for all students.

Packing for Empress is now well underway and any parents who could assist with this, even for a short time,  should give their names to M Waring, who is co coordinating the volunteer effort  for this.

In preparing for the move,  some of the  H&S Funfair materials were located and Adam will ensure these are kept aside for use  at the Funfair in May.

Teacher’s Report

Heather McQueen again thanked Home and School for the treats organized for Teacher Appreciation Week, which were very well received.  She also thanked Margo Jory for her support and enthusiasm in coaching basketball.  We did not make the playoffs, but everyone involved had lots of fun.

´Étoiles de Jeanne Sauv´e Talent Show & Caf´é is on Thursday 25 March at 7pm in Banting High School.  The cost will be $2 per person, $5 per family.  Parents are asked to provide a dessert.

Upcoming Events:

Hoops for Heart – Chris Morris and Sue Forbes have volunteered to help with that.

Junior Basketball & Track & Field – any parent  coaches should contact Heather please.

Treasurer’s Report

Pam  reviewed our current revenue and expenditure position, highlighting some minor changes to our budget forecast.

She thanked Susan Martin for all her hard work on the Scrip Fundraiser, which now stands at $417.23.  In order to promote this further, we will do a further feature on it in the upcoming H&S/SC Newsletter.

Our next major fundraiser is the Funfair on May 28th.   Lesley and Barb Ward will run the raffle - $2 per ticket, or $10 for a book.   As usual, we will have a silent auction, a book table, treat jars, games, including ‘Soak the Teacher’, bake table etc.  We are hoping that M Buxton will also have some of his artwork for sale.

Veronica has taken over the A&P receipts and asked that parents remember to tally their receipts together in bundles of $1,000 whenever possible.  She also  briefed the group about the possibility  of purchasing equipment items through the collection of Campbell Food Products Labels.

Grade 8 Fundraiser:  the Grade 8’s will probably host a pizza night (May) plus  two in school fundraisers.

Dress Code

No feedback or queries have been received from the school community.   Members present voted on the Dress Code –  passed.  (One against, no abstentions).

H&S Bylaws - No feedback or queries have been received from the school community.   Members present voted on the Bylaws–  passed unanimously.

School Council Bylaws: No feedback or queries have been received from the school community.   Members present voted on the Bylaws–  passed unanimously.

Other Business:

  • Playtime Day Care – Chris Morris reported that the Day Care group using Empress would be covered by our own Home and School Insurance, provided they purchased a membership.  After some discussion, it was felt that we should agree to continue to offer space to this Program for the incoming year, and then review future service in subsequent years, dependent on the identified needs of the wider school community.

  • Parking Lot Safety:   Lorene Wyngard and Joyce Bennett co ordinate a Parent Safety Patrol and it was felt that this could be a means for us to address safety issues once we move to Empress, when it is anticipated the vast majority of our students will be bussed/driven to school.  As always, our difficulty may lie in recruiting volunteers to run any scheme.  Adam confirmed that details of bus routes should be mailed home in the first week of August and he also confirmed that if for any reason the move to Empress is delayed, these bus routes, as worked out for August,  will the ones in place at the start of the school year.

  • School Photograph:  April 20th/21st – this will be a fundraiser for H&S, with money raised for every photograph taken, even if parents eventually decide not to buy the final photograph.   We also hope to have the full school collage taken to display at our new site – Sue will check out the public display issues and clarify details with Lifetouch Photography.

  • The contract for next year’s (2004/05) School Photography has been signed with Jostens.

  • Information Night – Lesley encouraged all present to attend the next Information Evening if possible.  She attended the last one – it was a very enjoyable and informative night.   Mary Kate had done an  superb job in visiting the elementary schools, encouraging children to think of French Immersion as an option.  The Powerpoint  Presentation was amazing and many parents had told her how they had been much impressed by our Principal –  not news to us, of course!!

  • Karen Keegans asked if there were any ways we could structure the meeting/agenda differently to encourage all members to feel that they were involved and participating fully.  Some discussion of this followed, and Lesley encouraged Karen to bring forward any ideas she might have.

  • Virginia Morely asked if we could look at a Homework Code.  She is familiar with the one used at Riverside School and will bring it along to the next meeting.  Although there is some guidance in the Agenda for parents, Virginia felt the Riverside document was also very helpful.  It was agreed that we should put this on the Agenda for our April meeting.

  • Janice Fellows confirmed that there is always additional pizza slices available on pizza day for any students or staff seeking to purchase some.  ($1.25 per slice; cookies @ 50c)

  • Lesley has a full, updated email list available to anyone who wishes it.

  • Janet suggested we consider more ‘educational/information sharing’ sessions for future meetings, which might also encourage attendance at meetings.

Date of Next Meeting: 8 April 2004, 6.30pm, Jeanne Sauve Staff Room.
